Salah satu kiat penting untuk tetap menulis adalah memiliki motto menulis yang menyandera. Maksudnya, motto itu memaksa penulis untuk selalu menulis, dan sekaligus penegur tatkala lalai menulis. Maka, canangkan di dalam hati sebuah motto yang menyandera!
Dalam buku saya SOS Sapa Ora Sibuk: Menulis dalam Kesibukan (2016)—yang direproduksi dengan penambahasan beberapa esai tahun 2020—saya menegaskan pentingnya motto menulis. Dengan motto itu, penulis berkekuatan untuk melawan malas dan menghalau godaan.
Meski pesan pentingnya motto hadir di dalam buku tahun 2016, sejatinya saya telah mempraktikkannya sejak 2013. Pada tahun itu saya mencanangkan motto “Write Everyday” (menulislah setiap hari). Pesan itu saya camkan dalam pikiran, saya jadikan background komputer, saya tempel di pintu, tembok, dan di mana pun agar mudah terlihat.
Berkat motto itu, saya benar-benar menulis setiap hari. Menulis apa genre apa saja—berbagai fenomena menarik bisa saya sorot dengan perspektif kajian sastra, budaya, literasi dan menulis kreatif. Tahun-tahun itu saya sudah memberikan pelatihan menulis ke berbagai daerah, jadi praktik menulis setiap hari membuat saya percaya diri: Saya menyuruh orang lain menulis tatkala saya sendiri juga menulis.
Dua tahun kemudian motto saya berubah menjadi “Write or Die” (menulis atau mati). Ini motto yang sangat kuat menggerakkan saya. Jika tahun 2013 dan 2014 saya berhasil menerbitkan 3-4 buku per tahun, maka tahun 2015 saya menerbitkan sekitar 5 buku, di antaranya buku Pagi Pegawai Petang Pengarang (2015).
Itu juga berkat program Pendidikan diri saya yang sangat keras untuk menulis cepat (speed writing), yang terinspirasi Mark Zuckerberg dalam film The Social Network (2010). Dalam program menulis itu, saya harus menulis esai sepanjang 850 kata dalam maksimal satu jam (60 menit). Saya lulus setelah berjuang selama dua tahun.
Itulah yang menggerakkan saya menulis tentang pentingnya motto menulis, berdasarkan pengalaman sendiri, dan esainya saya himpun dalam buku SOS Sapa Ora Sibuk: Menulis dalam Kesibukan (2016). Seiring keterampilan menulis cepat, plus motto yang membakar, saya menghasilkan tulisan yang saya publikasikan di blog-blog saya, website, serta buku.
Merasa menguasai menulis cepat dan berhasil menerbitkan lebih banyak karya, saya kemudian menulis dan menerbitkan buku Write or Die: Jangan Mati sebelum Menulis Buku (2017). Setahun kemudian, buku teori menulis yang saya hasilkan bertajuk Writing Is Selling (2018). Buku-buku lain tak perlu saya sebutkan di sini.
Namun, jujur saya akui bahwa motto itu saya hayati hingga tahun 2024, hingga terbitnya buku ke-78 saya yang berjudul Menyuarakan Creative (Nonfiction) Writing dari Ruang Ketiga (2024). Sebuah perjalanan kreatif yang panjang dan saya merasakan bahwa selama berproses kreatif, saya terdidik untuk mengembangkan teori dan teknik baru dalam menulis.[]
