Penulis adalah produsen pengetahuan, yang mengkreasikan pengetahuan dari gagasan atau ide yang terinspirasi oleh atau bersumber pada pengalaman, pikiran, perasaan, renungan, dan sumber lainnya. Jika dia menulis dari sumber buku berisi pengetahuan tertentu, maka hakikatnya dia telah mereproduksi pengetahuan baru.
Itulah kedudukan penulis resensi atau review buku. Dia memahami buku yang diresensi, menjadikannya pengetahuan dalam dirinya, menginternalisasinya, lalu memikirkan dan merenungkannya untuk kemudian menulis resensi. Itulah mengapa hasil tulisannya disebut resensi buku, tinjauan buku, timbangan buku, dan sebagainya—yang isinya bukan hanya menjelajah isi buku, melainkan pula menilai buku tersebut.
Sebagai peresensi, penulis tentu sengaja memiliki itikad atau niat untuk menebarkan pengetahuan itu kepada masyarakat pembaca—bukan hanya untuk disimpan bagi diri sendiri. Dia sengaja menawarkan “iming-iming” isi buku yang telah dibacanya kepada masyarakat agar mereka segera tertarik untuk turut menikmatinya.
Demikianlah peran para penulis resesi di dalam buku Resonansi Narasi yang Anda pegang ini. Ibaratnya, mereka sedang bertindak seperti Plato yang telah menuliskan pikiran-pikiran Socrates agar dibaca oleh masyarakat Yunani. Mereka menyegerakan kehadiran buku-buku yang mereka resensi kepada pembaca, agar pengetahuan segera dapat dinikmati dan mungkin akan direproduksi oleh masyarakat.
Dengan demikian, penulis resensi telah bertindak sebagai katalisator terjadinya dialog pengetahuan. Sebagaimana katalisator dalam proses kimia, penulis resensi memfasilitasi agar terjadi peluang awal untuk percepatan proses “kimia” antara pembaca dan penulis buku yang diresensi.
Bagaimana pun, dalam membaca sebuah buku, pembaca aktif melakukan dialog pengetahuan lewat proses berpikir di dalam dirinya. Dialog pengetahuan secara personal itu akan menghasilkan pengetahuan baru, baik hanya dipendam dalam pikiran maupun ditulis maupun disebarkan lagi kepada orang lain.
Dari buku yang dibacanya, pembaca memiliki pikiran dan kesadaran yang tercerahkan untuk melakukan tindakan—suatu kemampuan yang disebut oleh sosiolog C. Wright Mills (dalam Haralambos & Holborn, 2000) sebagai imajinasi sosiologis (sociological imagination). Mereka dengan imajinasi sosiologis memiliki motor penggerak, power atau kekuatan imajinasi dalam dirinya untuk kondisi ke depan yang dibayangkan dan diinginkan.
Tak diragukan lagi, sebagai katalisator dialog pengetahuan, para peresensi dalam buku ini memiliki imajinasi sosiologis. Mereka menciptakan ruang diskusi dialogis antara penulis buku dan pembaca resensi. Bahkan mereka memiliki kekuatan untuk menggerakkan pembaca untuk melakukan dialog pengetahuan dengan buku-buku yang ditawarkan. Mereka sedang menebarkan virus literasi untuk menjadikan pembaca sebagai katalisator dialog pengetahuan baru pada saatnya.
Demikianlah rangkaian produksi pengetahuan berlangsung (meski tidak disadari oleh kebanyakan kita), dan demikian pula proses peradaban dibangun lewat praktik-praktik literasi menulis yang terakumulasi secara masif. R.B. Downs (2001), lewat bukunya Buku-Buku Pengubah Sejarah, menggambarkan bagaimana buku telah berdampak besar bagi kebudayaan atau peradaban manusia. Sejarah membuktikan bahwa bangsa-bangsa yang telah mempraktikkan literasi menulis dewasa ini memetik kemajuan lebih pesat daripada bangsa yang hanya mengagungkan budaya lisan.
Sejak zaman Yunani, kedigdayaan literasi telah membuktikan kekuatannya. Dulu filosof-filosof Yunani menulis hasil pikiran mereka, sehingga masyarakat dan generasi penerus dapat membaca dan mempelajarinya—tanpa harus berguru langsung kepada Socrates, Plato, dan lainnya. Perantaranya artefak praktik literasi berupa tulisan.
Jujur kita akui, bahwa masyarakat Athena dan dunia menjadi paham tentang kebijaksanaan dan pemikiran Socrates berkat tulisan-tulisan yang dihasilkan oleh Plato. Kekuatan tulisan membuktikan bahwa, sehebat apa pun manusia, dia akan hilang dalam sejarah jika pemikirannya tidak dituliskan. Kita sebagai penikmat dan pembelajar filsafat tidak akan mengenal Socrates andaikata dulu Plato tidak pernah menulis tentang pemikiran dan kebijaksanaannya.
Sampai di sini kita bisa menggarisbawahi bahwa lewat tulisan para filosof Yunani dan penerusnya “mendidik” masyarakat secara masif. Budaya tulis ini tidak terjadi pada bangsa Mesir yang sudah hadir sebelumnya di muka bumi ini. Dan kini kita bisa menyaksikan mana yang lebih berpengaruh dalam dunia pemikiran di antara keduanya.
Oleh karena itu, saya mengapresiasi para penulis resensi dalam buku ini, karena mereka telah hadir dengan resensi-resensi mereka (yang beragam isinya dan caranya) untuk mempercepat dialog pengetahuan yang pada ujungnya merintis jalan bagi kehidupan masyarakat madani yang berbudaya literasi.
