Apa yang orang dengar dan ingat akan lenyap, apa yang orang katakan terlupakan, dan bahkan apa yang orang lakukan akan tak akan berbekas—kecuali semua itu diabadikan menjadi tulisan. Tulisan menjadi sarana pengabadi bagi memori, ungkapan, maupun tindakan manusia.
Ketika memori, ungkapan, dan tindakan mengabadi dalam tulisan, orang lain akan berkesempatan untuk membaca, memahami, dan memetik hikmahnya—bahkan mengembangkannya ke dalam karya lainnya. Di situlah tempat kondusif bagi tumbuhnya kontinuitas pengetahuan manusia dari masa ke masa.

Demikianlah kira-kira yang dimaksudkan oleh N Mimin Rukmini dalam buku Yang Bapak Tanamkan ini. Penulis ini dengan sengaja mengabadikan segala memori, ungkapan, dan tindakan—termasuk keteladanan—Bapaknya ke dalam sebuah buku. Hal ini sejalan dengan ungkapan Pramoedya Ananta Toer “Orang boleh pandai setinggi langit, tapi selama ia tidak menulis, ia akan hilang di dalam masyarakat dan dari sejarah. Menulis adalah bekerja untuk keabadian.”
Lihatlah bagaimana judul buku ini dipilih: Yang Bapak Tanamkan. Pembaca akan menangkap bahwa sang Bapak telah “menanamkan” benih-benih kebaikan tertentu yang sangat membekas di dalam pikiran dan hati penulis. Benih-benih itu kini sedang tumbuh berkembang di dalam diri penulis, sehingga ia mengabadikannya ke dalam buku. Amat boleh jadi apa yang telah ditanamkan akan terus bertumbuh, berkembang, dan berbuah berlimpah di masa mendatang.
Apa saja benih-benih yang ditanamkan itu? Pembaca segera menemukan bahwa buku ini memaparkan “segala kata, tingkah, perilaku, nasihat, langkah, dan teladan dari Bapak” penulis, sebagaimana tercermin di dalam judul-judul tulisan pada Daftar Isi. Jadi, selagi pembaca membaca sekilas judul-judul tulisan itu, pembaca akan menangkap petunjuk awal (clue) tentang apa isinya, masing-masing. Maka, pembaca seakan dipersilakan untuk membaca dari mana saja, apakah berurutan dari awal, dari tengah, atau dari bagian akhir.
Meski penulis menawarkan clue isi tulisan lewat judul-judulnya, soal isi utuhnya tentu harus diikuti secara utuh lewat membaca dan berdialog dengan masing-masing tulisan. Jika pembaca hanya menebak makna dari judul, itu pintu sebuah kegagalan pemaknaan atau penafsiran. Oleh sebab itu, pembaca tentu diharapkan membacanya dengan utuh, sebagaimana penulis pun menulis kata per kata mulai awal hingga akhir.
Satu hal penting yang perlu saya sampaikan di sini: Buku ini ditulis berdasarkan pengalaman dan faktor kedekatan emosional (keakraban) dengan objek tulisan, yakni sang Bapak. Karena itu, gaya bahasanya sederhana dan mudah diikuti oleh pembaca dari berbagai latar pendidikan, sosial, dan budaya. Secara lebih khusus, setiap anggota keluarga yang literat pastilah mampu menyerap buku ini dengan sangat baik.
Tentu saja, saya tidak hendak mendikte pembaca tentang isi buku ini, bukan? Sungguh, itu bukan ranah dan wewenang saya. Sebaliknya, saya menyerahkan sepenuhnya kepada pembaca, sebab pembaca memiliki latar pengetahuan, pemahaman, dan penafsiran yang berlimpah untuk menyerap buku ini. Bahkan, amat boleh jadi, pembaca akan terinspirasi oleh buku ini untuk kemudian mengembangkannya menjadi tulisan tertentu.
Saya ucapkan selamat kepada penulis buku ini, yang telah mencurahkan segala perjuangan lahir batin untuk mewujudkan impiannya dalam mengabadikan aneka pengalaman bersama Bapak. Mungkin saja ini menjadi tanda bakti sang anak kepada Bapaknya, dalam menghidupkan amal jariyah Bapak ke generasi selanjutnya. Bukankah amal jariyah manusia akan mengalirkan pahala tanpa jeda selama amal itu dihayati oleh orang lain—terlebih oleh anak keturunannya?
Akhirnya, untuk pembaca budiman, selamat membaca dan menyelami buku ini, serta memetik inspirasi dan hikmahnya. Bahkan, lebih dari itu, selamat menemukan momentum yang kondusif untuk mengembangkannya menjadi tulisan baru yang bermanfaat bagi sesama.[]
