Pada hari Sabtu, 3 Agustus 2024, saya memenuhi undangan Media Pendidikan Plus untuk menyampaikan materi Training of Trainer (TOT) kepada puluhan guru penulis. Dalam momen itu saya menyampaikan materi tentang menulis buku untuk warisan (legacy). Untuk sahabat di luar forum, saya ingin membagi substansi gagasan materi saya lewat tulisan ini.
Mari mulai dari titik ini: Jika kita berbicara warisan, yang terlintas dalam pikiran kita biasanya memang berupa harta benda. Ahli warisnya biasanya akan menerima limpahan warisan itu setelah si pemberi warisan meninggal dunia. Ada syarat dan ketentuan tertentu yang mengatur pembagian warisan. Karena berupa harta benda yang memikat hasrat manusiawi, warisan tak jarang bisa merenggangkan hubungan kekeluargaan ahli waris.

Buku sebagai warisan, tentu saja, bisa diperlakukan sebagai harta benda seandainya ia mendatangkan royalti (sebagai imbalan hak cipta penulis, ya pemberi warisan). Namun, dalam konteks Indonesia, seberapa besar sih royalti yang bisa diterima dari terbitnya sebuah buku? Jika ia benar-benar mega-best-seller, buku baru bisa mendatangkan royalti yang pantas untuk diwariskan. Jika tidak, tak usah bermimpi tentang royalti untuk warisan.
Pertanyaannya, berapa dari penulis yang mencapai “rezeki” (nasib baik) untuk menempati posisi dengan royalti yang pantas diwariskan kepada ahli waris? Jumlahnya tentu hanyalah sedikit alias tidak banyak. Kebanyakan penulis di Indonesia tidak bisa menggantungkan hidupnya semata pada menulis—apalagi memberikan royalti sebagai warisan kepada generasi penerusnya. Penulis biasanya juga berprofesi tertentu, entah formal entah nonformal.
Jika demikian, tampaknya konsep warisan dalam konteks ini tidaklah mengacu kepada warisan materiil atau finansial berupa royalti. Lebih dari itu, warisan yang dimaksud mengacu ke warisan imaterial, yakni warisan ilmu atau pengetahuan yang dikandung di dalam buku yang ditulisnya. Sementara, ahli warisnya bukan semata keluarganya, melainkan masyarakat pembaca.
Dalam perspektif penulis, buku merupakan hasil permenungan dan pemikiran yang telah dilakoninya dalam waktu tertentu. Dengan buku penulis menyampaikan sesuatu pesan penting kepada pembaca, dengan harapan bahwa kandungan ilmu atau pengetahuan dalam buku itu berkembang dan meluas secara berkesinambungan di kalangan pembacanya—baik keluarga maupun pembaca umum.
Dengan kalimat lain, lewat bukulah penulis memeberikan amal jariyah, suatu amal yang pahalanya terus mengalir selama amal itu tetap bekerja atau dikerjakan oleh orang lain. Bahkan, alirannya akan menderas jika amal jariyah ilmu dalam buku itu dikembangkan lebih bermanfaat lagi—dan oleh lebih banyak orang lain yang mengembangkannya.
Oleh karena itu, marilah menulis buku untuk warisan bagi anak cucu. Bila warisan harta benda kerap mendatangkan perpecahan dan malapetaka, percayalah: warisan buku tidaklah demikian. Setidaknya, jika hanya untuk dibaca dan dipelajari, buku bisa digandakan atau dicetak dalam jumlah besar, sehingga tidak perlu menjadi bahan perebutan satu sama lain.
Paling tidak, marilah menulis sebuah buku sepanjang hidup kita—jika memang kita tidak bisa menulis lebih. Jika Anda ahli dalam menulis, tuangkan gagasan dan pesan Anda ke dalam buku, agar anak cuku Anda bisa memahami apa yang Anda tuangkan. Jika Anda ahli beternak lele, tulislah buku tentang bagaimana teknik membuat kolam, memilih benih lele, merawat lele, memanennya, dan memasarkannya—agar anak-cucu Anda bisa meneruskan bisnis perlelean Anda.
Tentu saja, yang bakal membaca buku tentang menulis dan bagaimana beternak lele bukan hanya anak-cucu Anda, melainkan anak-cucu teman Anda, tetangga Anda, dan masyarakat secara luas. Pada titik inilah warisan pengetahuan Anda menemukan keberkahan yang melimpah, jariyah ilmu Anda berkembang dan meluas pada generasi penerus.
Marilah kita teladani tokoh-tokoh negeri ini yang telah mewariskan buku-buku mereka kepada bangsa kita. R.A Kartini mewariskan kumpulan surat pentingnya dalam Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang. Hamka telah mewariskan lebih dari 100 buah buku kepada kita. Gus Dur juga mewariskan puluhan buku, dan pendapatnya dibukukan ke dalam banyak buku. Iwan Simatupang mewariskan Merahnya Merah, demikian pula Budi Darma dengan Olenka-nya, atau Emha Ainun Nadjib dengan Seribu Masjid Satu Jumlahnya.
Praktisnya, silakan Anda temukan tokoh panutan di mana Anda akhirnya memutuskan untuk menulis buku. Anggaplah tokoh itu guru Anda dalam menulis buku. Berkat obsesi yang Anda bangun, percayalah Anda akan mampu merampungkan buku Anda sendiri. Tokoh itu akan memberikan kekuatan tersendiri bagi Anda dalam menulis buku. Anggaplah Anda sedang membuktikan kepada guru Anda itu bahwa Anda akan mampu mewariskan sebuah buku untuk anak cucu. Lalu, lihatlah apa yang akan terjadi.
Suatu ketika Anda akan menemukan buku-buku Anda, sebagai warisan (legacy), terpajang di rak perpustakaan, sudut baca, atau di platform online, sehingga masyarakat memiliki akses untuk membacanya. Legacy tulisan Anda juga diabadikan lewat berita, ulasan, feature; dan bahkan dikembangkan menjadi tulisan-tulisan baru yang kemudian dibaca luas oleh masyarakat (dan bangsa).
Jadi, rahasia besar dari menulis buku sebagai warisan ada di sini: Bahwa apa pun yang kita tulis dalam buku akan dipahami dan akhirnya dikembangkan secara luas oleh generasi kita. Benih-benih ilmu atau pengetahuan yang kita tanam akan tumbuh dan berkembang. Maka, tidak ada pilihan lain, marilah menulis buku yang isinya benih baik-baik, agar di kemudian hari tumbuh dan berkembang yang baik-baik.[]
