SETELAH saya menghayati motto “Write Everyday” selama dua tahun dan “Write or Die” selama sembilan tahun, saya menganut motto baru sejak Januari 2025. Motto menulis baru itu adalah “Sit and Write” (Duduk dan Menulislah).
Mengapa saya berganti motto menulis? Kalau dulu saya berpindah dari “Write Everyday” ke “Write or Die” untuk memperkuat daya dorong untuk menulis, mengapa sekarang berpindah lagi ke “Sit and Write”? Apakah motto terbaru ini lebih kuat daya dorongnya?
Untuk Motto “Write Everyday”, saya sudah mengalami dan merasakannya. Untuk motto ‘Write or Die’, daya dorongnya mulai melemah, tersebab oleh kondisi bahwa saya sendiri sudah memasuki awal masa lansia. “Ancaman” mati dalam motto itu tidak amat menakutkan seperti tahun 2015-an.
Sebab itulah saya mengambil motto yang praktis, yakni “Sit and Write”. Sederhananya, motto ini memberikan pesan kuat kepada saya sendiri untuk “menulis” setiap saat bisa “duduk”. Duduk seperti apa dan menulis seperti apa yang dimaksud dalam motto itu?
Dua kata perintah itu, memang, saya maksudkan tidak bermakna denotatif (lugas), melainkan lebih konotatif (kias). Kalau secara lugas saya harus menulis setiap kali duduk, pastilah saya tidak mampu. Sebab, di luar dunia menulis, saya juga harus menjadi kepala keluarga yang baik, tetangga yang baik, dosen yang baik, kolega yang baik, dan sebagainya.
Jadi, makna kias “duduk” dalam motto itu, pertama, menyempatkan waktu (make time) di tengah kesibukan. Sesibuk apa pun, harus ada waktu untuk menulis. Kedua, harus selalu berpikir dan merenung. Ketiga, harus mengendapkan renungan dalam kedalaman. Terakhir, harus menjaga mindset dan niat kuat untuk menulis demi kebaikan.
“Menulis” juga demikian. Ia dimaknai sebagai serangkaian proses menulis, mulai memikirkan gagasan/ide menulis hingga sentuhan akhir pada tulisan. Praktisnya, ketika duduk (yang disempatkan), mungkin saya memang menulis sebuah esai, tapi mungkin saya merevisi tulisan kemarin, mungkin pula saya merancang tulisan baru. Singkat, jangan duduk dengan kekosongan.
Dengan demikian, yang menggerakkan saya menulis adalah dorongan kuat yang disengaja untuk menjalani proses menulis, dengan komitmen penuh, di setiap tempat dan waktu yang saya mampu. Saya menulis dengan laptop, bisa pula dengan gawai. Yang penting: Menulis!
Sampai hari ini, motto tersebut terasa lebih nendang (dan kuat), setidaknya untuk kondisi fisik saya saat ini. Apakah saya menjalani proses menulis setiap hari, jawabnya “ya”, dan apakah secara implisit saya juga masih menyimpan ancaman “Write or Die”, jawabnya juga “ya”. Namun, jenderal kreatif saya sejak awal 2025 ini adalah “Sit and Write.”
Saya belum tahu apakah saya akan berhasil gemilang untuk mempraktikkan motto tersebut atau gagal di tengah jalan. Saya sukses mengamalkan “Write Everyday” selama dua tahun, kemudian menghayati “Write or Die” selama sembilan tahun. Jadi, untuk motto “Sit and Write”, saya tidak akan menilainya sekarang. Saya akan melakoninya (dan menikmatinya) dalam waktu-waktu ke depan.
Sedikit buah pengamalan motto itu, misalnya, di tahun 2025 ini adalah tiga buku: menerbitkan buku mandiri Becoming a Creative Writer: Proses Menulis Menuju Buku Paling Dicari (2025), serta mengkurasi dan mengeditori dua buku bunga rampai tebal: Unesa Penggerak Asta Cita: Pemikiran Konstruktif Civitas Academica untuk Presiden (2025) dan Seni, Sastra, dan Budaya Lokal: Pendekatan Multi-, Inter-, dan Transdisipliner (2025). Di samping itu, ada sejumlah book chapter yang saya setor untuk bunga rampai.
Di atas ikhtiar saya dengan melakoninya setiap hari adalah panjatan doa kepada Allah yang Maha Segalanya. Kalau ada ungkapan “ora et labora” (berdoa dan bekerjalah); saya tambahkan cengkeraman di dalam hati: Ihktiar dan berdoalah, kemudian hayati tasawwul (berserah diri kepada Allah dan menerima segala hasil yang terjadi.)[]
