Sejarah telah membuktikan betapa pentingnya tulisan untuk mengabadikan pikiran, ucapan, dan tindakan manusia. Manusia generasi sekarang mampu mengikuti peradaban manusia generasi terdahulu ketika ada peninggalan berupa tulisan. Lewat tulisan, kita bisa mengenal masa lalu.
Sebutlah nama filsuf Plato. Plato menuliskan pemikiran-pemikiran Socrates. Lewat tulisan-tulisan Plato para cendekiawan melakukan penelaahan dan rekonstruksi pemikiran Socrates. Penikmat dan pembelajar filsafat tidak akan mengenal Socrates andaikata dulu Plato tidak pernah menulis tentang pemikiran dan kebijaksanaannya.

Kita juga mengenal para penjelajah bumi seperti Vasco da Gama yang menemukan Eropah, Bartholomeus Diaz yang mengunjungi Afrika, Christopher Columbus yang menemukan Amerika, James Cook yang menemukan Australia, atau Kristofer Olympic yang menemukan Asia berkebangsaan Italia. Kita mengenal mereka karena mereka meninggalkan jejak-jejak tulisan.
Kita pun mengenal berbagai tokoh dunia di berbagai bidang semenjak dulu lewat karya-karya yang dihasilkannya. Sekali lagi, ini untuk menegaskan, bahwa tulisan mampu mengabadikan pikiran, ucapan, dan tindakan manusia. Tanpa tulisan, semua itu akan lenyap tanpa bekas.
Nah, dari perspektif inilah buku yang Anda pegang ini dimaksudkan untuk mencoba mengabadikan pikiran, ucapan, dan tindakan manusia—khususnya dalam hal ini berupa pengalaman sehari-hari dan catatan perjalanan yang paling mengesankan, yang ditulis oleh peserta workshop menulis di BBPMP Sulawesi Selatan.
Terutama tulisan yang terhimpun dalam buku ini berupa karya tulisan perjalanan (travel writing) dan catatan harian—topik-topik yang paling dekat dengan lingkungan penulis, penulisannya diharapkan berjalan lancar dan memenuhi target yang diharapkan. “Menulis yang paling kita ketahui dan pahami,” itulah ungkapan yang sangat sering saya sampaikan kepada penulis muda.
Selain itu, karena berbasis pengalaman, tulisan bisa beragam bentuk dan isinya sejalan dengan beragamnya pengalaman penulisnya. Ada pejabat, ada kepala sekolah, ada pula guru, dan pihak lain; dan mereka memiliki bekal pengetahuan (prior knowledge) dengan tingkat kecukupan dan kedalaman yang berbeda. Wajarlah jika tulisan yang mereka hasilnya memiliki kualitas yang berbeda pula.
Dalam hal ini saya tidak akan memberikan evaluasi terhadap tulisan-tulisan yang ada secara khusus. Justru saya akan memberikan apresiasi kepada para penulis yang telah mencurahkan waktu, pikiran, dan energi untuk menghasilkan tulisan yang dikehendakinya. Bagaimana pun, menulis itu sebuah keterampilan berbahasa tingkat tinggi yang menuntut totalitas kemampuan dari penulisnya.
Untuk penulis-penulis perjalanan di dalam buku ini, saya tegaskan bahwa mereka bukanlah Plato yang menuliskan pemikiran Aristoteles, juga bukan Vasco da Gama, Bartholomeus Diaz, Christopher Columbus, James Cook, atau Kristofer Olympic. Mereka merupakan sebagian dari masyarakat Makassar yang berusaha mengabadikan pengalaman perjalanan mereka.
Untuk para penulis catatan harian, saya juga tegaskan bahwa mereka bukanlah Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, Herman Melville, George Eliot, atau Emily Dickinson. Dalam konteks Indonesia, mereka bukanlah Mereka juga bukan RA Kartini yang surat-suratnya diabadikan ke dalam buku Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang. Namun, kita percaya mereka menulis bukan tanpa alasan: Mereka ingin mengabadikan pengalaman hidup keseharian.
Apakah yang mereka sertakan dalam tulisan mereka? Tidak lain dan tidak bukan adalah makna. Setiap tulisan mengandung maknanya sendiri, dan setiap makna akan dipahami atau ditafsirkan secara tersendiri oleh pembaca. Intensitas penafsiran dan penerimaan pembaca akan menentukan tingkat pengembangan makna itu ke dalam bentuk makna-makna selanjutnya. Hakikatnya, setelah mengalami dialog dengan pembaca, sebuah makna akan mengalami “metamorfosis” dan menghasilkan makna-makna yang baru.
Bagaimana dampak karya mereka bagi masyarakat kelak, itu bukanlah tugas para penulis buku ini, sebab tugas mereka menulis dan menerbitkannya. Justru tugas pembacalah yang tak kalah pentingnya, yakni berdialog dengan isi buku ini dan mengembangkannya ke depan dalam bentuk tulisan sejenisnya dengan inovasi dan kreasi yang lebih bagus.
Akhirnya, saya mengucapkan selamat kepada para penulis artikel yang terhimpun dalam buku ini, dengan harapan inspirasi dan aspirasi yang terkandung di dalam buku ini akan menemukan takdir terbaik pada waktunya. Jika hal itu terwujud, terpenuhilah misi buku ini. Mudah-mudahan.*
