Entah di buku saya yang mana, saya telah mengajak penulis (pemula) untuk menulis sesuatu yang paling diketahui. Tentu, sesuatu yang paling diketahui itu amatlah luas dan beragam. Akan tetapi, dua lingkup topik yang mudah dikenali adalah apa yang dipikirkan dan dirasakan (what you think and feel), dan apa yang dialami (what you do or experience). Keduanya melekat pada diri sendiri atau berkisar pada pikiran, perasaan, dan pengalaman diri penulis, bukan orang lain.
Akan tetapi, dua lingkup topik yang mudah dikenali adalah apa yang dipikirkan dan dirasakan (what you think and feel), dan apa yang dialami (what you do or experience).

Entah di buku saya yang mana lagi, saya juga telah menggarisbawahi pentingnya menulis dengan gembira dan tentang sesuatu yang menyenangkan. Dengan kegembiraan dan kesenangan itu, penulis sangat terbantu untuk menuangkan maksudnya ke dalam tulisan dengan lancar. Passion menulisnya mengalir bersama aliran gagasan yang menyatu dalam diksi-diksi yang mewakilinya.
Salah satu aksi penulis yang mengandung pikiran, perasaan, dan pengalaman yang menyenangkan—serta memungkinkannya menulis dengan senang dan gembira—adalah bersafari, yakni melakukan perjalanan, petualangan, atau wisata ke tempat-tempat yang disenangi. Dari empat puluh dua tulisan yang dihimpun dalam buku ini, tiada satu pun yang tidak bertindak sebagai “prasasti” bagi pengamatan, ekspedisi, pengalaman atau safari kultural penulisnya. Entah di mata pembaca yang mana, tulisan-tulisan di dalam buku ini menjadi epigraf yang bermanfaat, setidaknya menjadi pembuka bagi lahirnya tulisan-tulisan serupa, baik dari diri penulis maupun dari pembaca.
Dari empat puluh dua tulisan yang dihimpun dalam buku ini, tiada satu pun yang tidak bertindak sebagai “prasasti” bagi pengamatan, ekspedisi, pengalaman atau safari kultural penulisnya.
Penulis buku ini tentu bukan para petualangan dunia yang telah mengabadikan petualangan mereka ke dalam buku-buku mereka. Dia bukan seorang penjelajah asal Portugis Vasco da Gama yang menemukan Eropah. Dia bukan Bartholomeus Diaz penjelajah pertama yang mengunjungi Afrika. Dia pun bukan Christopher Columbus yang menemukan Amerika. Dia juga bukan James Cook yang menemukan Australia. Dan dia bukan Kristofer Olympic, penemu Asia yang berkebangsaan Italia itu.
Penulis buku, Telly D., adalah seorang purna yang kerap melakukan safari ke berbagai tempat di negeri ini. Benar bahwa penulis buku tidaklah seterkenal Vasco da Gama, Bartholomeus Diaz, Christopher Columbus, James Cook, dan Kristofer Olympic. Namun, percaya atau tidak, dia memiliki apa yang mereka juga miliki, yakni jiwa melakukan safari atau perjalanan dan petualangan, serta mengabadikan hasilnya ke dalam tulisan (alias buku). Penulis buku ini mungkin tidak pernah berpikir bahwa buku ini akan menyejarah di tengah masyarakat sebagaimana yang dihasilkan oleh para penjelajah dunia di atas. Namun, penulis buku ini pastilah berharap buku ini akan memberikan manfaat bagi pembacanya.
Justru penulis buku ini seorang purna, saya semakin yakin atas tesis yang kerap saya lontarkan di berbagai kesempatan: Bahwa orang yang pensiun itu kaya pengetahuan dan pengalaman hidup; dan jika mereka menulis, hasilnya pastilah sangat bagus dan meyakinkan. Tesis itu menemukan konteksnya pada penulis buku ini. Tidak salah disebutkan bahwa dia menulis di usia senja, tetapi itu bukanlah masalah, sebab ada sejumlah penulis yang produktif di usia senja: Sydney Sheldon, Dan Brown, dan J.K Rowling, atau Marry Shelley. Yang terdekat, ada Thea S. Kusumo yang menulis memoar Jalan yang Telah Kulalui (2013) pada usia 77 tahun, novel Endang (2014) pada usia 78 tahun, dan Bimo (2016) pada usia 80 tahun.
Saya semakin yakin atas tesis yang kerap saya lontarkan di berbagai kesempatan: Bahwa orang yang pensiun itu kaya pengetahuan dan pengalaman hidup; dan jika mereka menulis, hasilnya pastilah sangat bagus dan meyakinkan.
Mencermati buku ini, pembaca seakan diajak untuk bersafari bersama penulis. Ada puluhan tulisan safari/perjalanan (travel writing) dalam buku ini yang telah mengalami perkembangan membaik dari versi sebelumnya. Dalam catatan saya, tulisan-tulisan dalam buku ini sebagian besar telah ditayangkan di blog pribadi penulisnya. Artinya, tulisan-tulisan yang ada telah mengalami proses penulisan yang kompleks dan menyita perhatian penulisnya.
Pembaca bisa mencermati sendiri bagaimana kekuatan narasi penulis telah dikembangkan olehnya. Bagaimana hal ini bisa dilakukan? Sekali lagi, dia lebih banyak menarasikan apa yang dipikirkan, dirasakan, dan dialami dengan gembira. Di dalam tulisan-tulisannya ada muatan-muatan emosional yang terkesan mendalam tentang apa yang ditulisnya. Jika kita menulis dengan segenap hati, pesan kita akan sampai ke lubuk hati pembaca, begitulah kira-kira ungkapan yang pas.
Eureka, eureka! Inilah genre tulisan yang mengasyikkan. Penulis buku ini telah mencoba meniti jalur genre tulisan safari atau perjalanan (travel writing). Dan pilihan itu sudah tepat, sesuai dengan talenta dan potensi yang dimilikinya, yakni kemampuan menarasikan dengan baik dan kesempatan untuk melakukan safari ke berbagai destinasi. Masih terbuka luas kesempatan untuk mengembangkannya.
Eureka, eureka! Inilah genre tulisan yang mengasyikkan. Penulis buku ini telah mencoba meniti jalur genre tulisan safari atau perjalanan (travel writing).
Buku perjalanan yang layak dibaca, misalnya, buku Laporan Jurnalistik Kompas: Ekspedisi Jejak Peradaban NTT yang dieditori oleh A. W. Moedjiono (2011). Di dalam buku itu, antara lain, ditulis: “Ekspedisi Jejak Peradaban NTT Kompas adalah sebuah upaya menyelami kehidupan masyarakat NTT, yang sepertinya hanya memerlukan sedikit saja sentuhan tangan dingin untuk dapat menghasilkan berbagai komoditas yang dapat meningkatkan kemakmuran segenap anak bangsa.” Ada catatan perjalanan ekspedisi para jurnalis Kompas di NTT yang kaya akan potensialam dan budaya.
Ada juga buku perjalanan lain, berjudul Oleh-Oleh Jurnalis : Catatan Traveling di 20 Kota pada 11 Negara (2016), yang menceritakan jejak petualangan Doan Widhiandono, seorang wartawan. Dengan sedikit imajinasi, pembaca diajak berpetualang mulai di negara-negara Asia, Australia, eropa, dan tak ketinggalan keindahan dalam negeri tercinta. Tidak hanya mengunjungi tempat-tempat elok tapi juga merasakan berbaur dengan warga dan festival pada masing-masing negara. Dengan kelihaian bahasanya, penulis telah menarik imajinasi pembaca untuk membayangkan keseruan berbagai tempat yang dikunjunginya.
Saya sendiri pun pernah menerbitkan buku Jejak Budaya Meretas Peradaban (2014) yang sebagian isinya juga merupakan tulisan perjalanan. Beberapa tulisan yang dikandungnya, misalnya, “Melintasi Khattulistiwa”, “Merekam Sungai Barito dalam Puisi”, “Pengalaman Terbang Paling Menegangkan”, dan “Duel dengan Street Boy di New York” menunjukkan bagaimana saya mengabadikan hasil amatan dan pengalaman perjalanan ke dalam tulisan. Seorang kawan penulis, Sirikit Syah, pernah mengomentari buku tersebut, “Pak, buku Jejak Budaya panjenengan sangat bagus dan berbobot.”
Terkait buku perjalanan, pernah diakui oleh penulis Agustinus Wibowo, bahwa buku perjalanan Indonesia—narasi, bukan panduan—yang ditulis oleh orang Indonesia masih sangat minim. Katanya, kebanyakan buku perjalanan Indonesia ditulis oleh orang asing. Mereka cenderung memberikan pandangan atas-bawah: bangsa asing merasa dirinya lebih unggul, sementara bangsa Indonesia dipandang primitif. Karena itu, diperlukan lebih banyak penulis buku perjalanan Indonesia untuk mengimbangi buku-buku perjalanan yang telah ditulis bangsa asing tersebut.
Mudah-mudahan kesempatan dan sekaligus tantangan itu mampu dijawab oleh penulis buku ini. Dia memiliki talenta dan potensi untuk melaluinya, setidaknya di luar buku ini, sejatinya dia telah terlebih dahulu melahirkan beberapa buku yang berkisah tentang keluarga besarnya—hanya saja semua itu belum diterbitkannya, berkat perasaan rendah-hati (humble) yang dimilikinya. Meski demikian, jika talenta dan potensi itu dikembangkan, bukan mustahil baginya untuk menjadi penulis buku perjalanan yang andal.
Mengapa perlu mengembangkannya? Bagi penulis, setelah mencapai kuantitas karya yang diinginkan, target selanjutnya adalah kualitas: yakni kualitas dalam ide atau gagasan, kualitas pengorganisasian, dan kualitas penggunaan bahasa. Semua hanya bisa dicapai dengan banyak praktik dan latihan dari waktu ke waktu. Sebuah perjuangan yang berkelanjutan. Dia belum menjadi penulis travel writing seperti Graham Green, John Steinbeck, Bill Bryson, Peter Sommer atau John Hawks; namun, biarlah dia membuktikan bahwa buku ini akan menemukan nasib baiknya sendiri.
Mudah-mudahan kehadiran buku ini menjadi pemantik motivasi dan inspirasi bagi pembaca yang memiliki passion yang sama berupa bersafari ke berbagai tempat. Jika hal ini tercapai, harapan terdalam penulis ini terpenuhi, yakni mencoba bertindak sebagai katalisator kecil yang ikut menjadi salah satu simpul konitunitas pengetahuan dari yang sudah diabadikan ke dalam tulisan hingga fakta-fakta berharga yang masih berserakan di persada tercinta ini.
