Cerita pendek (cerpen) merupakan salah satu genre karya sastra prosa. Sebagai karya sastra, cerpen hakikatnya merupakan abstraksi kehidupan manusia dan pengalamannya. Sebagai abstraksi, cerpen, sebagaimana karya sastra lain, bukanlah fakta semata, melainkan gabungan fakta dan imajinasi pengarang.
Dengan kalimat lain, cerpen yang baik adalah cerpen yang menggunakan fakta, sekaligus mengandung imajinasi. Jika tulisan hanya berupa fakta, ia cenderung menjadi reportase atau sejarah. Sementara itu, jika tulisan hanya berupa imajinasi, tanpa basis fakta sama sekali, ia menjadi fantasi liar yang tidak meyakinkan.

Tentu saja, tidak mungkin seorang penulis cerpen tiba-tiba menjadi penulis cerpen yang baik. Sebagaimana penulis-penulis terdahulu, penulis cerpen juga mengalami proses belajar dan latihan yang panjang–mengolah fakta dan imajinasi menjadi karya yang bermutu. Dalam prosesnya, semula dia mungkin menulis banyak fakta dan kurang imajinasi, atau banyak imajinasi dan kurang fakta. Namun, waktu akan mendidiknya untuk mengolahnya secara estetik (indah).
Demikianlah kiranya pesan yang dapat ditarik dari kumpulan cerpen Nawasena dan Nozomu karya para peserta didik SMPN Negeri 2 Sedati Sidoarjo. Inilah karya cerpen yang dikemas dari kisah-kisah (bahagia) mereka dalam menjalani masa pandemi. Mereka menguak fakta, sekaligus menyertakan imajinasi mereka, dengan porsi masing-masing. Mereka ingin berbagi kebahagiaan, dan menularkannya kepada sesama.
Disengaja atau tidak, kumpulan cerpen (kumcer) Nawasena dan Nozomu ini ditulis untuk memenuhi fungsi karya sastra. Kata Horace atau Horatius, karya sastra ditulis untuk memenuhi fungsi dulce et utile ((dalam bahasa Latin, sweet and useful), yakni fungsi menghibur (berkat keindahannya) dan fungsi kemanfaatan dalam mendidik pembaca. Dengan caranya masing-masing, cerpen-cerpen dalam dua buku ini mengemban dua fungsi tersebut secara bersamaan.
Tentu saja, karya mereka tidak harus dinilai dengan tolok ukur kualitas karya secara ketat, semisal tokoh dan penokohan, tema, setting, alur, dan sebagainya. Sebaliknya, mereka justru perlu dihargai telah berhasil menjadi pembelajar yang berani dalam menulis cerpen. Mereka termasuk sedikit dari peserta didik yang berani mengekspresikan gagasan kreatif mereka ke dalam tulisan. Menaklukkan keminderan, kekhawatiran, atau ketakutan menulis adalah perjuangan tersendiri bagi penulis pemula.
Di samping itu, keberanian mereka dalam menulis merupakan wujud keteladanan bagi sesama peserta didik dan orang lain yang belum tergerak hatinya untuk menulis. Mereka tidak perlu berkampanye secara lisan ke sana kemari. Mereka cukup memberikan keteladanan itu. Action speaks more loudly than words, tindakan lebih keras suaranya dari pada kata-kata.
Bagaimanapun, menulis membutuhkan proses belajar dan latihan; demikian pun menulis cerpen. Mustahil seseorang mampu menulis cerpen dengan sempurna hanya dengan menulisnya sekali atau dua kali. Bagi sebagian orang, proses belajar menulis cerpen memakan waktu bertahun-tahun. Mereka memasuki lorong gelap yang panjang, guna menemukan terang benderangnya mulut lorong di ujung sana.

Para penulis cerpen dalam dua buku ini, tentu saja, masih memerlukan proses belajar dan latihan. Meski demikian, yang melegakan, para penulis cilik kumcer ini telah dikondisikan dalam ekosistem yang cukup bagus. Setidaknya, Kepala Sekolah memberikan keteladanan dengan mengikutkan karyanya ke dalam dua buku ini, dan sekaligus memberikan fasilitas penyusunan buku. Hal ini memperkuat semangat para penulis cilik untuk berproses lebih lanjut.
Tidak ada seorang pun tahu apakah para penulis cilik dalam dua buku ini suatu saat kelak akan menjadi penulis cerpen. Namun, kehadiran dua buku ini telah menjadi tonggak yang mengabadikan karya mereka saat ini, untuk dikunjungi sewaktu-waktu. Jika mereka suatu saat telah meniti profesi bukan sebagai penulis sastra, setidaknya mereka sekali tempo tetap menyempatkan diri menulis dan menularkan kemampuannya kepada anak cucu.[]
