Mari introspeksi: Apakah kita sudah mencapai impian-impian kita? Jika sudah, kita wajib bersyukur karenanya. Selain ikhtiar yang sudah kita curahkan, juga doa-doa yang menyertainya, Tuhan-lah yang memberikan anugerah. Tanpa perpaduan ikhtiar dan doa serta anugerah-Nya, mustahil impian-impian kita tercapai.

Namun, ada sebagian impian yang belum atau tidak tercapai. Nah, di sinilah kita akan merasa getun (menyesal), “Mengapa saya dulu tidak melakukan ini? Mengapa tindakan bodoh itu saya ambil saat itu? Seharusnya saya bertindak lebih hati-hati.” Ungkapan semacam ini bisa menyelimuti pikiran kita. Dalam istilah Jawa, mbendhol mburi (bendol di belakang) atau getun mburi (menyesal di belakang). Tidak ada getun ngarep (menyesal di depan), memang. Jadi, ungkapan itu pas sekali.
Jika kita lapang hati, mbendhol mburi barangkali tidak menimbulkan masalah psikologis yang berarti. Sebab, kita menyadari bahwa selain digariskan Allah, kita memiliki pilihan. Life is a choice. Hidup itu pilihan, dan setiap pilihan mengandung konsekwensinya. Maksudnya, jika kita menerima “nasib” tertentu saat ini, sebagai akibat dari tidak dilakukannya ikhtiar-ikhtiar pada masa lampau, ya mesti kita terima apa adanya. Itulah sunnatullah. Kita harus rela menerima ketentuan-Nya, untuk mengharapkan ridha-Nya.
Namun, jika kita sempit hati, mbendhol mburi bisa jadi berbuntut panjang. Penyesalan terus menjadi bahan pemikiran dan akhirnya mengganggu kondisi psikologis. Dalam kondisi sempit hati, apa saja bisa dilakukan. Kita mungkin tidak hanya menyalahkan diri sendiri, melainkan apa pund an siapa pun yang terpikirkan atau terlihat oleh kita akan ikut disalahkan. Itulah pelampiasan yang sejatinya menggelikan—namun tetap dilakukan oleh yang bersempit hati. Depresi akut akan ke mana lagi arahnya.
Oleh karena itu, mari kita pesankan kepada anak-anak kita, para generasi muda yang akan melanjutkan perjuangan kita, agar mereka menentukan sikap hidup mereka dengan kesadaran utuh—serta diiringi petunjuk Allah, sebutlah dengan shalat istikharah—serta menjalaninya dengan sebaik-baiknya, sebagaimana pelukis yang menyaputkan kwasnya pada kanwas yang putih dengan sepenuh perasaan. Semoga mereka tidak mengalami mbendhol mburi yang terlalu berat.[]
